The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Žilina offers accredited doctoral programs that provide a unique opportunity to pursue advanced studies in key areas such as electrical engineering, information and communication technologies, photonics, energy systems, intelligent transport, and digital innovations.

At the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, University of Žilina, we offer four tailored paths to pursue doctoral studies. Each path reflects different opportunities for funding, collaboration, and research orientation, ensuring that candidates can find the model best suited to their academic profile and career ambitions.

Regular path

This path is designed for top-ranked candidates who succeed in the faculty-wide admission competition

  • The PhD. position is fully funded by the faculty
  • Candidates are selected based on excellent academic results and strong research potential
  • Provides broad opportunities to join established research groups and participate in ongoing faculty projects

Project path

This path is ideal for candidates motivated to join a specific research project led by a faculty supervisor

  • The PhD. position is fully funded by the supervisor’s research project
  • Candidates are selected through a targeted competition, following requirements defined by the supervisor
  • The research is strongly aligned with the scope and objectives of the funded project

International path

This path is tailored for candidates wishing to pursue doctoral studies in an internationally collaborative setting.

  • The PhD. position is fully funded by grant within an international agreement between institutions
  • Created through cooperation between the supervisor and international academic partner(s)
  • Candidates gain access to dual institutional affiliation, international mobility, and exposure to global research networks

Industry path

This path is created for candidates aiming to combine academic research with industrial practice.

  • The PhD. position is co-funded by the faculty and an industry partner
  • Topics are strongly application-oriented, addressing industry challenges and leading to real-world implementations
  • Candidates benefit from dual supervision - academic and industrial - and direct exposure to the professional environment

Admission requirements

  • Completed Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field for a PhD. position
  • Excellent grade record via Master studies
  • Strong background in the proposed research area
  • English language proficiency (minimum B2/C1 level) – proved by certificate is advantage
  • Motivation letter

  • Communication and teamwork skills
  • Recommendation letter(s)
  • Strong motivation for international / project / industry research and mobility
  • Interview with the doctoral project supervisor

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT UNIZA) is strongly committed to supporting and developing talented PhD students as the next generation of researchers, innovators, and academic leaders.
