History of the Faculty

History of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of the University of Žilina goes back to the year 1953 when the College of Railways in Prague was founded. Another milestone in its history is the year 1959, when the College of Railways was renamed to the University of Transport and a joint faculty was created by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.

In 1962, the College of Railways moved to Žilina. Along with the College, important representatives came to Žilina, who had rich experience from practice, scientific research activities and especially university pedagogical practice. In 1992, after the split, the Faculty returned to its previous original name. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering was renamed in January 2019 to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. It became the first technically oriented faculty and generally the second Faculty in the Slovak Republic awarded the Quality Certificate for quality control system according to ISO 9001 (in 2003). Since that time further three successful re-certifications were realized (2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016).

The focus of scientific research and education of individual departments is developing dynamically in response to the constantly changing needs of the market and the development of science within the national and European context. From the solution of classic topics of electrical engineering in transport focused on electric traction, railway signalling technology, or technical operation of telecommunications, the main emphasis is currently on information and communication technologies applied in safe process control in transport and industry, modern telecommunications technologies, development of power electronic systems and modern management of electrical networks. Interdisciplinary disciplines are also developing, namely mechatronics, biomedical engineering and multimedia technologies. Students of the faculty acquire competencies through targeted education, which will enable them to succeed in the labor market not only on a national but also on an international scale. Many graduates of the Faculty work in lucrative positions in many spheres of society with both traditional and new employers.

Profile of the Faculty

The focus of scientific-research activity and education of individual departments is developing dynamically in response to the ever-changing needs of the market and the development of science within the national and European context. From solving the classic topics of electrical engineering in transport focused on electric traction, railway signalling technology, or technical operation of telecommunications, the main emphasis is currently on information and communication technologies applied in safe process control in transport and industry, modern telecommunications technologies, development of high-performance electronic systems and modern management of electrical networks. Interdisciplinary disciplines are also developing, namely mechatronics, biomedical engineering and multimedia technologies.

Goal, mission and vision of the Faculty

The basic strategic goal of the Faculty is sustainable development, based on the traditional understanding of its scientific, educational and humanizing mission. The aim is to build a faculty capable of responding in advance to dynamic changes in the external environment using its innovation potential. A significant share of scientific research activities supported by extensive international cooperation as basic preconditions for the provision of quality university education, including doctoral studies, is crucial for the further development of the Faculty. The strategic needs and goals of the development of the Faculty are based on the mission of the University of Žilina as a higher education institution, given by Act no. 131/2002 Coll. about universities.
