Student scientific and professional competition

The Student Scientific and Professional Competition (SSPC), organized by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT) at the University of Žilina (UNIZA), represents a unique platform for showcasing students’ scientific inquiry, innovative thinking, and professional development. This well-established annual competition offers young talents an exceptional opportunity to present their research results and technical projects, thereby fostering not only their theoretical expertise but also their practical skills. Through SSPC, FEIT UNIZA actively supports the growth of students in its core domains  - electrical engineering, cybernetics, and information and communication technologies - contributing to their professional advancement and enhancing their prospects for successful career integration.

SSPC objectives and benefits

The primary objective of SSPC is to provide a platform for presenting high-quality student projects and to encourage students to engage actively in research, development, and professional activities during their studies, particularly those connected to their future career paths. The competition fosters analytical, creative, and critical thinking, supports the development of technical and project-related skills, and helps students better navigate the areas relevant to their professional orientation. Presenting their work before an expert committee offers students valuable feedback that contributes to their academic growth, enhances their scientific communication, and strengthens their presentation and argumentation skills. In this way, SSPC serves as an essential step in preparing students for the challenges of both academic and industrial environments.

Who is the competition intended for?

The SSPC platform is intended for all full-time students of FEIT UNIZA enrolled in bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral study programs across all accredited fields of the faculty. A SSPC initiative entry may be developed as part of:

  • a scientific, research, professional, or technical activity carried out by the student during their studies or within an industrial environment, or
  • a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral thesis.

Research and professional domains

An important aspect of the competition is its focus on projects that address current challenges and innovations with scientific, professional, or technical potential and with possible practical relevance and application. The project areas submitted to SSPC reflect the faculty’s priority domains within education and ongoing research activities across its departments and research groups: semiconductor technologies; integrated microelectronics and photonics; fiber optics and sensing; electrical energy and power electronics; information, communication, and multimedia technologies; artificial intelligence and machine learning; modern control processes; cybernetics, automation, and robotics; and biomedical engineering.

What does the competition offer to you?

  • Professional growth and practical skills
By working on their projects and presenting them at SSPC, students enhance their ability to address technical and research-oriented challenges and to connect theoretical knowledge with practical application. They gain valuable experience in analysis, experimentation, and the innovative solving of problems within their field of interest.
  • Development of presentation and argumentation skills
The competition provides a unique platform for refining presentation skills and defending one’s results before an expert committee. In this way, students strengthen their communication and argumentation abilities, which are essential for their academic and professional development.
  • Establishing contacts and collaboration
Participation in SSPC enables students to establish valuable connections with fellow students, the academic community, and industry professionals. This network can play a key role in future projects, internships, or career opportunities.
  • Strengthening the professional profile and career opportunities
Success in the competition can serve as a springboard for further studies or career advancement. It helps students strengthen their competitiveness in the job market, supports their scientific ambitions, and opens new opportunities in research, industry, and academia.
  • Financial awards and professional recognition
The best SSPC projects are not only financially rewarded, but successful students also receive faculty support for their further development through collaboration with our research teams or industrial partners.

SSPC organization guide

  • Faculty announcement
Within the designated timeframe, the Dean of FEIT UNIZA officially announces the competition and publishes the conditions for participation, rules, and organizational guidelines for the implementation of SSPC. The announcement also includes the evaluation criteria. SSPC is organized for all faculty students enrolled in the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral study programs.
  • Registration to competition
Students register for the competition by submitting an application form. Each SSPC application must include a one-page abstract of the competition project, prepared either in Slovak or in English. Completed and signed application forms for SSPC 2026, together with the project abstract, are to be submitted to the secretariats of the respective departments either directly by the students or through their supervisors. In addition, the project abstracts must be sent electronically to the email address: feit.svos@feit.uniza.sk, with the subject line: “SSPC 2026 – project abstract."
  • Faculty evaluation round
The Department for Science, Research, and International Relations FEIT UNIZA ensures the formal review of submitted materials and verifies compliance with the defined requirements. The submitted projects will be evaluated based on the applications and the accompanying abstracts. The aim of the evaluation is to assess the quality of the submitted projects, highlight their individual strengths, and examine their alignment with the faculty’s professional and research orientations.
  • 2-Minute SSPC (SSPC Elevator Pitch)
Selected students present their research or technical project in the form of a 2-minute contribution, summarizing the essence of the project, its objectives, key results, and potential impact or benefit. This stage provides a concise presentation of the project idea and supports the expert committee in the evaluation process. The SSPC Elevator Pitch is prepared as a presentation video created using MS PowerPoint. The presentation video must be sent to the email address: feit.svos@feit.uniza.sk
  • SSPC project presentations and award ceremony
Students present their research projects and technical works in fron of the SSPC committee. The SSPC committee consists of experts from FEIT UNIZA and/or a combination of FEIT UNIZA specialists and industry partners. SSPC projects are presented in the form of posters displayed on the premises of UNIZA, on the date and at the time specified in the official SSPC announcement. Posters are evaluated based on expertise, originality, methodology, execution, and the presentation skills of the participants. The competition concludes with a ceremonial announcement of the winners and the awarding of prizes by the Dean of FEIT UNIZA.
